Dutch runner destroys competition, smashes 23-year-old women's mile world record

The women’s mile world record stood for 23 years before Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands shattered it by .23 seconds Friday at a IAAF Diamond League event in Monaco. She posted a time of four minutes 12.33 seconds to beat Russian runner Svetlana Masterkova’s 1996 record of 4:12.56.
But because of the pace the 26-year-old started at, the world record seemed out of reach, and even she admitted she was stunned when she realized what she accomplished, dropping more than two seconds off her previous personal best time, Reuters reported.
Hassan — who is a world champion in the 1,500 indoor event and trains with the Nike Oregon Project, per Runner’s World — completed her final 800 meters in 2:04 to negative split her race.
Here’s the full race:

More via Reuters:
“I knew I could run fast, but the first 800 was a bit slow, so after that I wasn’t thinking it would be a world record,” said Hassan, who took more than two seconds off her previous best for the distance.
“When I crossed the line I was so surprised,” she added after clocking a 62 seconds final lap.
“After you run the last 400 like that, and set a world record, it gives you so much confidence over 5,000m.
“I want to double over 1500 and 5,000 in Doha (at the world championships in September) and the way I finished the last 400, it’s amazing.”
Ukranian runner Olha Lyakhova led the way for more than half of the race before dropping out, making way for Hassan to take over.
After moving to the front and away from the majority of the field, Hassan took off for the final lap, and by the time she finished, her competition wasn’t even in the frame. Great Britain’s Laura Weightman came in second with a time of 4:17.60.
