Kawhi Leonard delivered an NBA championship to Toronto in his first year with the team, but the reigning Finals MVP is just two weeks away from being able to opt out of his contract and test free agency.
The Raptors knew they could potentially lose Leonard after one year when they traded away beloved guard DeMar DeRozan last summer, but went all in on winning a championship in 2019. That gamble paid off – but according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Raptors “have work to do” in order to retain Leonard this offseason.
For now, the Raptors are still in celebration mode, and Leonard cracked a joke about the situation in an interview with Rachel Nichols. Nichols asked Kyle Lowry if he’s going to try and sell Leonard on sticking around in Toronto, but Leonard interjected before Lowry could answer.
“They don’t want me here no more. They got what they got. They got what they needed.”
This will certainly become a meme if Leonard leaves town for Los Angeles, as has been speculated. Lowry went on to say that he respects Leonard’s decision, and that he knows Leonard will do what is best for himself and his family.
