Jeff Van Gundy on the time he wanted to 'rip' Tracy McGrady’s 'face off'

NBA legend Tracy McGrady and former Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy reflected on their time together in Houston on Friday in a segment on ESPN, and Van Gundy recalled the only time he lost his mind on McGrady during their three-season partnership.
In vivid detail, Van Gundy recalled a botched end-of-game scenario against the Sacramento Kings, where McGrady left Chris Webber open behind the three-point line instead of fouling before Webber could attempt a shot. The Rockets went on to lose the game after Webber drilled a clutch three, and Van Gundy was livid.

Tracy McGrady: “He coached me for three years and it was only one time that he was extremely angry at me.”
Jeff Van Gundy: “Like, ready to rip his face off. So we’re up three at home against Sacramento. They take a timeout, there’s about three seconds left.

We have practiced all year, we’re always going to take the foul. So [Chris] Webber catches it with his back to the basket, McGrady’s got him. He doesn’t foul him. Then Bibby comes off, [McGrady] goes like we’re switching, we’re a non-switch team, he jumps to a guy who doesn’t have the ball. Webber turns, hits a three, ties it up, and we lose in overtime. And the next day we fly to Miami and we’re going to play in Miami. And I told him before our meeting ‘just take it. I can barely even look at you right now. Just take it in there.’”
Tracy McGrady: “He let me have it in front of everybody.”
