Fishing has always been fun for Jake Moore, but after his mom was diagnosed with lung cancer about a year ago, fishing became an integral part of his life.
“I’ve always fished, but I hunted more than I fished,” Moore, a 36-year-old Kentucky sportsman, told the State Journal. “Then my mom got really sick [and] hunting wasn’t enough action for me. So I started fishing, and it helped me. I’d go fishing every day. It occupied my mind and kept it off what she was going through.”
Last Sunday, while fishing in the Kentucky River, Moore caught and released a 93-pound blue catfish. It was a personal best, one of the largest caught in the state, 11 pounds shy of a record that has stood since 1999.

Immediately afterward, Moore glanced to the heavens.

“When I finally got it to the bank I laid down beside it, out of breath, looking up in the sky, knowing she was looking down smiling,” he told For The Win Outdoors. “I shed a few tears as well.”

Moore’s mom died last Nov. 18. He had been fishing, to clear his mind, when word arrived that her condition had worsened. He rushed to her side.
“I gave her a hug, and she said, ‘You stink. You smell like fish,’” Moore recalled to the State Journal. “Those were her last words to me, but that’s OK because she knew I liked to fish.”

Moore has since maintained his passion for fishing, using the nickname “Crankinstein Moore,” in reference to how often he cranks his fishing reel. His motto, “Rippin’ lips and giving tips,” alludes to his angling proficiency and a willingness to help others catch more fish.
Moore, who used shad to bait the 93-pound catfish, said he has caught 10 catfish weighing between 30 and 70 pounds in the past four months.
“I fish every single day, even if it’s just for 30 minutes,” he said. “And I think about her every trip.”
